Sent to Vienna at Waldstein's & Neefe's suggestion to meet Mozart where B. |
April 7

Arrived Vienna. Soon thereafter he was invited to play for Mozart, performing among other works, his piano sonata - op2#3. Mozart also provided a theme that contained a "trick" secondary theme which Beethoven immediately noticed & "pounced" upon in brilliant improvisation. The 30 yo Mozart quietly moved to another room there telling friends something like: "Keep your eyes on that fellow; one day he'll give the world something to talk about" |

Departed Vienna, returned to Bonn upon receipt of news of mother mortal illness. (Met Anna Maria (Nanette) Stricher nee Stein for 1st time in Augsburg while en-route to Bonn.) |

Mother died of TB at age 40yrs. Father immediately sold her clothes for alcohol and Beethoven took charge of family. B. told friends of melancholia. Known for obstinate & passionate moods. |
